After a couple of recommendations, I rented out Happy Gilmore and was promised that it was Adam Sandler’s best film. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear….
Where to begin? Well the film is about a wannabe ice hockey player who cannot skate or dribble, but has an incredibly powerful shot. His grandmother is having her house repossessed, and so needing money he takes up golf, going to the driving range and winning bets by out driving people. He then meets golf pro Carl Weathers who promises to turn him into a golfer on the pro circuit so he can win lots more money. “Comedy” ensues and Happy Gilmore ends up beating a stuck up golf pro to win the big tournament.
Sounds great I’m sure, but the problem I have is with Adam Sandler. He has 1 style of acting. Normal, then SHOUTING. Normal, then SHOUTING. If you look at the films he has starred in, this is a recurring pattern. I’m sorry, but this one trick pony doesn’t make for a great film.
I don’t feel any need to discuss this further. This film is rubbish. If you want to watch a good film about golf, go and get The Legend of Bagger Vance. I love that film. It made me feel much happier than “Happy Gilmore” ever did. But feeling generous, I will give this film a point for every time I nearly laughed…
Rating: 3/10
You’ve been a bit too generous with that one. Adam Sandler should be shot at dawn. In fact, forget that. Shoot him now!

!! Russ, I’m shocked! You got the recommendations for a reason.. it’s just genius! How can Adam screaming at a golf ball /not/ be funny?
