Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I went into this film not really knowing what it was all about, so I had no preconceptions. I would like to be able to take this stance with all films in future, based on my experiences of this film!

Eternal Sunshine is a hard film to describe. Basically Jim Carrey having discovered that his girlfriend Kate Winslet has undergone a procedure to erase him from her mind, decides to undergo the same procedure. As his memories are being erased, he discovers his true feelings for her and fights to retain his memory of her.

You really have to watch this film to understand its appeal. I thought it was superb. I was shocked by the performance of Jim Carrey. For those people put off by his “rubber-face” don’t be. The man can act, and puts in a sterling performance, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The supporting cast is excellent as well. Great performances by Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood and Tom Wilkinson. They all added nicely to the piece.

Throughout the film, I kept wondering what it would be like to be able to erase the memories of a person, my thoughts and feelings, and would I do it or would I be willing to live with my pain and suffering? I leave that as an open question. :)

Eternal Sunshine is a great film, and an unexpected gem. Due to the randomness of some of Jim Carrey’s memories, it certainly demands another viewing, which is rare of films these days. One to watch out for!!

  2. Watched this tonight and agree it is an excellent film, but for me it should have ended with the shot of the files in Kirsten Dunst car.
